If you had a blast on the Nantahala River and enjoyed all the river adventure-based activities the Smokey Mountain region offers – you and your loved ones are going to have a ball on the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River. Home of the major motion picture and novel, Deliverance, this stretch became popularized post film release and subsequently the first river on the east coast with a Wild and Scenic River designation. For a truly unplugged get-away in nature, spend 48 hours adventuring on the Chattooga River with the following itinerary…
The Chattooga River starts on the slopes of the Appalatian mountains in tiny rivets which eventually coalesce into a 50 mile stretch of rapids that descend a half a mile in elevation before reaching their home in lake Tugaloo. One of the best parts of rafting the Chattooga River is the opportunity to boat a half-day, a full-day or an overnighter. If you choose the half-day you will experience splash and giggle worthy water including the famed Bull Sluice Rapid. For even more jaw dropping action, spend a full day on section III which also includes Bull Sluice Rapid. Finally, for the experienced and adventurous rafter, section IV offers up a tasty drink with three heart-pounding class IV’s over the span of quartermile gorge. The river drops 75 feet as you descend Entrance, Corkscrew, Crack-In-the-Rock, Jawbone and Sock’em Dog Rapids. Whatever section(s) you choose, the Chattooga never disappoints.
