Chattooga Section 3 and 4: What's the Difference?
The Chattooga River offers exciting trips for rafters of all levels. Section 3 is the perfect trip for novices, for families with children or those seeking a fun and relaxing river experience. This section increases from class I to class III rapids, and includes the option to run Bull Sluice, a class IV drop. Section 4 is 8 miles of the most challenging whitewater in the Southeast, and includes the famous Five Falls. Section IV is a trip for experienced rafters, and those looking for an adventurous day on the river. If you choose a Section 4 trip, you should be prepared to be an active participant in your rafting experience.
What does it mean that Chattooga is a Free-Flowing River?
As the first designated Wild and Scenic River in the greater Smoky Mountain region, the Chattooga has been protected from development since 1974. Thanks to its designated status, boaters today are assured an experience of wild nature unparalleled in the Southeast.
The Chattooga is a free-flowing river, which means there are no dams limiting the flow of water on the river. Water levels naturally vary with the amount of rainfall. During spring and early summer, the water is usually high, and so is the adventure. By late summer and fall the water level has dropped, and trips are more relaxed. Rain and drought have a direct effect on the number and size of rapids.
What to Expect On Your Chattooga Trip
All Chattooga trips require a hike into and out of the 1/4 mile protected corridor. Guests should consider the strenuous nature of the trip and expect to assist in carrying rafts & equipment. All trips on the Chattooga are fully-guided by professional guides. Your trip starts at our Wildwater Chattooga Adventure Center and we transport you to and from the river. Our Chattooga facilities include: changing rooms and hot showers, river store, picnic area, game area for horseshoes & volleyball, zipline canopy tours, free Wi-Fi (on campus), rental luxury log cabins, group yurts and cottages.
