Take a ride along side the beautiful Nantahala River on the GSMR Nantahala Gorge Excursion! Departing from Bryson City, this four-and-a-half hour excursion carries you 44 miles to the Nantahala Gorge and back again. Enjoy Bluegrass music and Appalachian stories while traveling along the Tennessee and Nantahala Rivers. The historic Trellis Bridge takes you across Fontana Lake and into the beautiful Nantahala Gorge. There is a one-hour layover where you can relax by the river or enjoy sight-seeing.
This separate train only ticket is often booked by group members who want to enjoy the Great Smoky Mountain Railway excursion with their friends or family who are combining the train with rafting or ziplining. Friends and family on the Raft & Rail or the Rail and Zip will get off halfway through the tour, you can meet up later in town.
Spend a beautiful day in the Nantahala Gorge with Wildwater and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. You’ll begin your trip in Bryson City, NC at the train depot, with a 2 hour railroad excursion including crossing the Fontana Lake Trestle and into the Nantahala Gorge. As you travel on the train, watch paddlers challenge the rapids you will soon be rafting.
At the top-of-the-line, you will disembark the train and travel a short distance to the launch site.
After a paddling orientation your group will raft the entire 8 miles of the Nantahala River on our Fully Guided raft trip. A picnic lunch is included, as well as changing facilities with hot showers and transportation back to your car at the train depot.
Rails & Trails (meets in Bryson City)
Enjoy this 7 hour trip combining the Great Smoky Mountains Railroads trip with the Waterfall Jeep® tour. You’ll begin your trip in Bryson City, NC, with a 2 hour railroad excursion over Fontana Lake and into the Nantahala Gorge. As you travel on the train, watch paddlers challenge the rapids. At the top-of-the-line disembark from the train and climb aboard our customized Jeep® for a personal exploration up the mountain, past waterfalls and lakes, up to the Appalachian Trail and back. A picnic Lunch is included.
Nantahala Tarzan Train
Our train and canopy combo trip will start in Bryson City at the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad train depot. You will ride through the Smoky Mountains, along Fontana Lake and up into the Nantahala Gorge. On your 2 hour train ride, watch paddlers challenge the rapids on the Nantahala River.
At the top-of-the-line, you will disembark the train and travel a short distance to enjoy a BBQ lunch on the banks of the Nantahala River and then travel to Wildwater’s Nantahala Gorge Canopy Tours.
After enjoying a fully guided tour with 13 ziplines and 8 sky-bridges, including spectacular views of the smoky mountains and Lake Fontana, check out your photos and buy a t-shirt in our store. Your adventure will end later in the afternoon back at your car in Bryson City. All transportation is included.
Members of your group and escorted young children who do not want to go on the canopy tour can remain in the train, meeting up with the group later on in the afternoon. *The train only trip ends 2-2 ½ hours before the train and canopy combo trip gets back to Bryson City.
